Volunteer Feature: Patrick McQuillen

As a huge sports fan born and raised in Massachusetts, Patrick McQuillen moved quickly to get involved with SUFC after a friend showed him an Instagram post while they were out for dinner.
McQuillen has lived in Somerville for the last five years and “absolutely loves it.” His interest in soccer stemmed from Fenway Sports group buying Liverpool in 2010.
“With the Red Sox ownership connection, it was kind of a match made in heaven for me to start supporting that team,” McQuillen said. “A couple Champions League and Premier League championships later, I was certainly happy with my decision.”
In McQuillen’s role as the community liaison and operations adviser, he is determined to intermix the beauty of sports with helping Somerville be the best version of itself. The moment he is most excited for this season is the first true goal at home.
“I cannot wait for us to score our first goal,” McQuillen said. I’ve been thinking about it a lot. It’ll be the culmination of so much hard work behind the scenes. Even if it is in a loss, it’s still a step toward something new. I can’t wait to see the reaction from whoever scores it. It’s going to be an awesome moment.”
For McQuillen, the goal is simple: to leave an impact on the community he has grown to love.
“I’m hopeful and excited for success on the field, but that’s above my pay grade—I’ll leave that to the players and coaches. Off the field, success is measured by the impact we have: how many people we reach, the causes we support and the connections we create,” McQuillen said. “I want us to be a ‘third space’ where people can come together, separate from work, school or anything else. That’s the best thing about sports—it gives you a break from everything else and a chance to connect. Whether it’s donating blood, volunteering or raising money, there are so many ways we can make an impact, and that’s how I’ll measure success this season.”
